Oooo Girl You So Different… I Know!

This is my unbiased opinion about For Colored Girls.
I’ve never read the book nor have I seen the play. Nor have I read any other bloggers reviews.
I am not a spoiler! I recommend YOU go see IT for yourself!

Four things:
Anika Noni Rose- killed the game. She is a STAR! And her style early in the film was gorgeous!

Red lipstick- I must find me some red lipstick!
Tom Ford sunglasses- I must get some!

Michael Ealy was absolutely terrifying in this movie!!! You will NOT be mesmerized by his blue eyes or his beauty!

I have to say Emmit R. Perry Jr. (Tyler) stepped up to the plate and knocked this one out of the park! You know how people sometimes have two sides. This is one of those instances. Tyler Perry let Emmit Perry his real self write the film! I believe the pressure to do this book and play justice influenced his writing and direction. He did a great job! I have in the past been VERY disappointed by his films. But this was so not his film. I believe he tried with all his might to honor the author of the book and play.

This movie will be different things to different women. It is an emotional roller coaster that at times you may want to get off mid-ride. If you have ever experienced any of the pain depicted in the film you will understand if not you won’t. It may be overwhelming for some to see all the hurt a man can cause a woman in one film, but it is what it is. I came away from this film feeling melancholy. But that’s me I’m an emotional person.

Each actor brought their A game. The acting was excellent! I normally have a problem with Janet Jackson and even she surprised me.

I believe once I read the book I will have a fuller understanding of the poetry (spoken word) that was woven throughout the movie. To me the writing was beautiful!

These women were absolutely fabulous. The characters were believable and somebody better be nominated and receive awards!!

My one criticism is there was a bit of predictability with some scenes, but still well acted.

So that’s it. MY opinion of  FOR COLORED GIRLS.

Predictability and plot holes. TP's faves. You know how I feel about it and him. I read the book in h.s. and college and even tried out for the play. I didn't make it but my friend was lady in red and those women KILLED IT!!! I'm not interested in his version. But I celebrate your right to like it.

I am truly interested in seeing both the play and reading the book. I'll probably think different after getting a true understanding of the work! But yeah he did a good job with his interpretation to me. Also you are a student of film so you see things other might not! LOL! Thanks for commenting! :)

P.S. I love this... said...

Hmmmm still not convinced.. and you came away feeling melancholy? Not a feeling I want when I leave a movie. I will wait 'til it comes out on DVD.
I'm glad you enjoyed it though.

Yeah the content of the movie was not sunshine and roses, so melancholy was my emotion but it was still a good movie.

@khaki
yeah that's why I said I'm different. I have not seen the play or read the book so for me I viewed the film with unbiased eyes. The general consensus was that he could not do this movie justice based on his past work and I viewed from a different perspective. This was TP's best work compared to his other movies.

Thanks for your review. I want to see it. I know a lot of people are not big fans of Tyler Perry, but I like him & can't knock him. He overcame a lot in his life & is doing pretty good for himself! I am looking forward to seeing this.

Ok, finally saw it. Didn't make it to the theater, so I rented it the first chance I got. Made fiance watch it with me. Whoa- you were right it was an emotional roller coaster. Definitely not a "feel good" movie. I agree with you the women did a phenominal job, especially Anika and no you could not look at Michael Ealy the same way in this movie! What he does in this movie was too much for me. Definitely not your traditional TP movie, but some excellent acting. I agree you probably need to read the book or see the play to have a better understanding, I was not expecting the poetry.
