Movie Club Meetup: MONEYBALL

Hey Movie Clubbers,

We kicked off movie club 2012 (original post here )with a homage to the Academy Awards. It's time to review Moneyball. Let's get to it.

I really enjoyed Billy Beane's relationship with his daughter. When she sang to him was the best part of the movie to me. I like that song it's catchy!

It’s super sad that I live in the bay area and because of my lack of interest in baseball this movie was NOT familiar. I vaguely remember the news doing the count or something but yeah not one game did I attend during the winning streak.They showed different years of footage but I'm assuming this happened in 2002 right?

Stephen Bishop as Dave Justice was pretty good.  I enjoyed the scene when Billy Beane told him to step it up for the younger guys and be an example. It was interesting to learn that while he played for the A’s, part of Dave Justice's salary was still being paid by the NY Yankees for him to play against them. What a blow to an ego man! Umm..but Stephen Bishop was FAHN!

It never even occurred to me that there are rich teams and poor teams. As much money is generated in the bay area, for the A’s to be a considered a poor team is just… SMH!

The scenes during the winning streak were nice. I liked how they mixed old footage with real scenes. The 20th game drama was EPIC! and dude who was scared of the baseball knocking it out, getting a homer and winning the game? YES!

Overall, the movie was a bit slow and a bit boring, but it had its certain scenes. I watched, but was not interested and I did not see why it was nominated for an Oscar.

Okay so we watched and reviewed The Help and now we're continuing Movie Club 2012 (original post here )with an homage to the Academy Awards. Like last year we are viewing then reviewing the movies nominated. Next up is Moneyball with Brad Pitt for the March movie.

Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players.

Let's look at Mr. Pretty and get him out of the way lol! I enjoy a good Pitt flick, and to be honest I would like to see what all the hype was about, because this film didn't get any love at the award show.

Well aside from Angie's leg which has it's own Twitter account and is tumbling around Tumblr.

Movie Club Meetup: THE HELP

 Hey Movie Clubbers,

We kicked off movie club 2012 (original post here )with a homage to the Academy Awards. It's time to review The Help. Okay let's get to it.

I enjoyed The Help, sort of.  I could totally identify with Minnie Jackson and her sassy-ness. I enjoyed her so much and totally believe Octavia Spencer deserved her Academy Award for her acting in this role. All that maid hoopla is just… blah blah blah. She WON!! Yay!

Hilly Holbrook was an evil witch. I hollered when she ate the now infamous sh*t pie. That was super ballsy of Minnie to do, but I feared for her life throughout the remainder of the film. I just knew Hilly would tell and Minnie would be beaten or hung for her actions. I was sad when Minnie’s daughter had to quit school and start being a maid. The stereotypical abusive black man *eye roll*

The way they treated Celia was just so mean! I hate when cliquey people single out a person and mistreats them. She seemed so sweet and she tried so hard to fit in. Oh but that Hilly Holbrooke jealous self just had to make Celia's life and everyone else's life a living hell! I hated Bryce Dallas Howard in this role! She played her part! lol

Let's not forget Skeeter being name Skeeter! Hahahahahaha!

The Help was slow and boring in some parts so my attention waned, but overall it was an entertaining movie.

I have had many conversations with my Mississippi kin folk who have said I would have not made it if I was born and raised in Mississippi during that era. I agree!

I also completely hated Mary J. Blige’s song for the movie #yeahIsaidit HATE!

Our next movie is Moneyball It's available on Netflix Let's see what all the hoopla is about.

I would like to add Albert Nobbs to this list. We must see and discuss this.

Movie Club Kickoff: THE HELP

We're kicking off movie club 2012 (original post here )with an homage to the Academy Awards. Like last year we will be viewing then reviewing the movies nominated.

Since The Help is getting so much love right now I thought it would be appropriate to kick off this years movie club with it. It's available on Netflix so those of you who have not seen it will be able to get it. Many of you have seen The Help already in theaters or on Netflix and I would enjoy hearing your thoughts about it. Please let me know through this post how many of you have already seen it so I can do the review post, and we can move on to the next movie. Okay let's get to it. Happy viewing! :)

 The announcement's been made. It's ACADEMY AWARD TIME!!!

 
Hey Movie clubbers,
It's that time again. Let's continue our online movie club with the homage to the 2012 Academy Awards. We will continue in the same format as last year by voting on each movie until all the nominated films have been viewed. 

Last year we waited until many of the films could be rented on/at Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster. This year we are starting before the award show so feel free to view a few on the big screen. I hope many who participated last year comeback and I hope to welcome some newcomers as well. Together let's watch the films that are deemed worthy of the OSCAR by the academy!

The general format is to watch one film per month and meet at the end of that month to post our comments about each movie. Cast your vote for our first flick and the choice will be posted Wednesday, February 1, 2012.  I personally cannot wait to discuss The Help. Woo hoo! Let's Do it!

Hey Movie clubbers,

It's that time again. Let's welcome our new clubbers and watch some movies.  The movies for June are The King's Speech and Never Let Me Go.

The King's Speech is the final Academy Award selection. Some of you have seen it and I would love to hear what you thought. Our 2nd selection is Never Let Me Go.

The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it.

 

 As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.

It's that time again. June's choices are Morning Glory, Never Let Me Go, The Town and/or The King's Speech.

I was thinking we could watch the King's Speech as the final Oscar selection since it actually won the big show, and one other choice. Two movies are not too much is it? Let me know what you think.

Movie Club: 127 Hours

Hello Movie clubbers,

I made a executive decision(lol K Rock) and picked "127 Hours" which is available on DVD everywhere including Netflix. We will meet online and review this film on Friday, April 29, 2011
I will do a post that day so we can give our opinions. I hope this doesn't interfere with anyone's viewing of the royal wedding. :sarcasm: okay not really.

Many of us have already seen most of the Academy Award nominated films. I'm thinking of doing an additional post were we can give our opinions about the movies we've seen so we can move on to other great films. The only movies I haven't seen are "127 hours", "Black Swan" and "The Kids are Alright", which I plan to remedy by the end of this month. In the future we will just choose between two films.

Let's kick off the movie club original post here with an homage to the Academy Awards by viewing and reviewing the movies nominated. Jameil suggested the King's Speech as our first movie. Movies Anyone???

Has anyone watched the series Everybody Hates Chris? I did and I thought it to be well written and funny after the seasons progressed. Anywhoo, there's an episode in Season 4 where “Chris inadvertently gets his teacher in trouble when he makes the suggestion of writing a report from a movie instead of a book.”

This got me to thinking, one of my 2011 goals was to start a book club, but instead of starting one I found a really good one to join and will be going to my first meeting in a few weeks...

But what about an online movie club???????????

Many of us love movies, have a favorite movie or might be curious about movies we’ve never seen. That coupled with Netflix, RedBox On Demand, Blockbuster and the actual movie theater, makes watching a movie simple. I'm thinking we could view and discuss some very interesting films similar to Z from P.S. I Love This and my recap of Claudine in this post.    

So if you are interested in joining an online movie club let me know in the comments. I think this will be hilariously fun! Don't you?

Some tenative guidelines are: All members can suggest movies. We will view one movie a month. We will meet the last week in the month. Let’s discuss the best day. Feel free to add any other suggestions you think that will make this club successful. I’m excited!!!! Are you??
